Are You Covered?

If you are one of the thousands, if not millions of people looking for the right homeowners insurance policy, this article is for you. The reason you should look around for more than one quote is because if you go to company A and they offer you package A for $1000 ie. And you say yes and go with them, you might not know that company B offers the same plan A at $895, or even company C offering the exact same policy A for $875. You need to look around and find the right company for you and your needs. If you want 100% coverage at an affordable price, you have the right to have it.

Generally homeowners insurance companies will advise you to purchase a plan that covers the value of your actual building value, not land value. You will probably want enough to finance the rebuild of your home. Remember that this plan should be purchased for your home rebuilding cost, not necessarily the price you purchased it for. It may be less money than you paid, or it might be more.

The amount of coverage percentages you have chosen determines the amount you would get back. The decision you make as far as coverage is concerned, the lower the premium price will be, however- if something happens and you have a loss, the recovery you get could be substantially less. For ie. if your home insurance policy covers you for $250,000 thats how much you will get back at a total loss, no matter if your home value is $450,000.

Make sure the contents of your home are also covered. This includes high priced jewelry, electronics, furniture of high monetary value, high end paintings, and furs etc. Some companies will lump this in as %50 of your total home value. If you think this number differs from that, you don't want it all insured, or you believe more needs to be insured, it is best to inventory everything you want insured and take pictures of those items, this will ensure that your covered for what you want to. You also want to make sure if your house were to become inhabitable your coverage would also cover hotel bills, meals, and any other expenses you think might come into play while your house is being restored or rebuilt.

One last thing to think about is liability insurance for your home. Maybe you have a tree in your yard that could fall onto your neighbors property, or if the kid across the street breaks his arm while playing on your property, your responsible. That's why you will want your homeowners insurance policy to also cover legal bills, to prevent unneeded money coming out of your pocket.

Have you been able to test which companies offer the best customer service or anything like that by chance? That would be very interesting info.
